Cutting Back During A Down Economy: The Question Is What?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

What do you cut back on to get you through a down economy?  Well, I found out that there are quite a few things you can cut back on to get you through a tough economy.

Cable, do you really need 1000 channels of nothing to watch?  You can scale back on those extra pay channels like HBO, Cinemax, and Starz.  Most of the movies you have seen at the theater anyway.  The rest you rented or bought the DVD.  Who needs them?  Not me!  Go to a matinee instead of a prime evening show, you can save a bundle on a family of four.  Smuggle in your own snacks, buy a couple of sodas there to throw off suspicion.

Internet speed, do you really need 15 Megabytes, of download speed?  How about 30 Megabytes?  Most people can get plenty out of a $17.99 one megabyte or $29.99 three megabyte DSL or Cable line.  Why spend $40 or $50 even $60 or more for Internet speed you aren’t even utilizing.

If you got the great “3 for $99” deal, watch when it ends, my bill went up to $192 without warning for services I did not use.  IE. home phone.  Cancel unneeded services to scale your bill down.  Again pay channels may be included but when the deal is over you pay full price.

Consolidate your trips and plan them out.  Stop running to the store for one or two items.  Take that time you aren’t spending watching cable and plan your shopping and errand trips.  Here is an even more novel idea, use coupons.  I know, I know, I know!  No self respecting guy is going to use a coupon to buy something.  If I told you the amount of grocery money I saved on my last trip equated to a free case of beer,  what would you say to using coupons?  Yeah thought so, LOL

Well, those are just a few of the things that I did to save a few bucks.  What are some of the things you have done to scale back?

What are you doing to survive this economy?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

At the beginning of November I lost my job.  Fortunately I had a few dollars saved up because whatever the reason one Friday I walked in and was told to leave.  Yes, it was just like the movies Office Space “We find it’s always better to fire people on a Friday.  Studies have statistically shown that there’s less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.”  Since that time I have been denied unemployment benefits, lost my girlfriend and had to move back in with my mother.  Not the place you want to be at my age, but not the end of the world, she loves the company and I can help her out financially with some rent money.

I would love to hear some of your stories regarding this terrible economy and how you have managed to survive in these trying times!
